Tony Lazzeri

Tony Lazzeri Marquee Hall of Fame 1991

b. December 6, 1903 · New York Yankees 1926–1937, Chicago Cubs 1938, Brooklyn Dodgers 1939, New York Giants 1939

He drove in at least 100 runs in seven different seasons and finished with 1,191, batting .292 with 1,840 hits, 178 home runs and 115 triples. He played 1,457 games at second base, another 165 at third and 89 at shortstop. His best year at the plate was 1929, when he had 193 hits.

He had epilepsy for the whole of his playing career, at a time when the condition was kept out of the newspapers and was widely assumed to disqualify an athlete. Only one of his fourteen seasons produced an All-Star selection, in 1933 — the first year the game was played, and already his eighth in the majors.

The Yankees won six pennants and five World Series in his twelve years there. He closed with a season in Chicago and a final year split between Brooklyn and the Giants, and he died at forty-two, in 1946. The writers never gave him more than 80 votes on a ballot; the Veterans Committee elected him in 1991.
