He reached the major leagues at seventeen in 1959 and caught his last game in 1980, which put him in four decades. In 1967 he hit .295 with 14 home runs and 69 runs batted in and finished second in the Most Valuable Player voting to his teammate Orlando Cepeda, and St. Louis won the World Series.

Twenty-one seasons gave him 1,501 hits, 242 doubles, 645 runs batted in and a .271 average, with two All-Star selections. He led the National League with 13 triples in 1966, which no catcher had done. He caught for the Cardinals clubs that won in 1964 and 1967 and was Steve Carlton's personal catcher in Philadelphia, which extended his career by years.

He broadcast twenty-four World Series, more than anyone, and won three Emmys. The 1986 ballot gave him 16 votes of 425 and three committees have looked at him since. He died in 2023, at eighty-one.
