Ted Kluszewski Marquee

b. September 10, 1924 · Cincinnati Reds 1947–1953, Cincinnati Redlegs 1954–1957, Pittsburgh Pirates 1958–1959, Chicago White Sox 1959–1960, Los Angeles Angels 1961

In 1954 he led the National League with 49 home runs and 141 runs batted in and struck out 35 times all year. He hit 40 the season before with 34 strikeouts and 47 the season after with 40. Nobody has combined that much power with that little swinging and missing since.

He cut the sleeves off his uniform because his arms would not fit, which Cincinnati eventually made official with a vest, and the photographs of him are the reason a generation of children thought that was how a first baseman ought to look. Fifteen seasons gave him 1,766 hits, 279 home runs and a .298 average.

A back injury took the power away at thirty-one. He was a reserve for the 1959 White Sox and hit three home runs and drove in ten in that World Series, which they lost. Fifteen writers' ballots got him to 58 votes of 432 at the peak, in 1979. He died in 1988, at sixty-three.
