Syl Johnson Marquee

b. December 31, 1900 · Detroit Tigers 1922–1925, St. Louis Cardinals 1926–1933, Cincinnati Reds 1934, Philadelphia Phillies 1934–1940

He pitched from 1922 to 1940, which spans the live-ball era from Ty Cobb's Detroit to the year before the war, and finished 112-117 with a 4.06 earned run average across 2,165 innings and 542 games. He was a starter for St. Louis in the late 1920s and a relief pitcher for Philadelphia in the late 1930s.

He won 14 games twice for St. Louis and pitched in the 1928, 1930 and 1931 World Series for the Cardinals, who won the last of them. He saved 43 games in an era with no such role.

He was from Portland, Oregon, and had been a boxer before baseball. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 1985, at eighty-four.
