He was Rookie of the Year in 1982 with 49 stolen bases, and in 1983 he could not make the throw: 30 errors at second base, most of them wild, on a routine play he had made all his life. He worked through it and had no such trouble afterward, which distinguishes him from Chuck Knoblauch, who did not.

Fourteen seasons gave him 1,949 hits, 444 stolen bases, 278 doubles and a .281 average, with five All-Star selections and a Silver Slugger. He had 205 hits for the Yankees in 1989 and 175 or more in four other seasons.

He won World Series titles with the Dodgers in 1981 and 1988 and hit .300 or better five times. He has worked in finance and broadcasting since. The 2000 ballot gave him two votes of 499.
