He was Rookie of the Year in 1991 with 26 of the 28 first-place votes and won the World Series with Minnesota that October. He stole 45 bases in 1996 with 197 hits, 62 in 1997, and finished with 407 in twelve seasons, batting .289 with 1,132 runs.

New York traded four players for him in 1998 and he won three more World Series. Then, in 1999, the throw to first base stopped working: he made 26 errors, most of them wild throws, and by 2001 the Yankees had moved him to left field. It is the best-known case of the affliction the game has.

He was named in the Mitchell Report in 2007 and testified to Congress about human growth hormone. Four All-Star selections and two Silver Sluggers. The 2008 ballot gave him one vote of 543.
