Born February 18, 1891

In the second game of the 1916 World Series he went fourteen innings for Brooklyn and lost 2-1. The man who went the other fourteen was Babe Ruth, then a Boston pitcher, and the game is the one both of their obituaries mentioned. Smith had gone 14-10 with a 2.34 earned run average that season.
Fourteen seasons gave him 114 wins against 118, a 3.32 earned run average, 2,052 innings and 142 complete games. He was 11-9 with a 1.85 earned run average for the Brooklyn club that won the 1920 pennant, and he pitched in that World Series too, which Brooklyn also lost.
Cleveland had him from 1922 to 1927, where he won 44 more and pitched into his thirties on control alone. He was one of the best pickoff men of the period. The 1948 ballot gave him one vote of 121. He died the following year, at fifty-eight.
