In 1910 he hit .331 with 123 runs batted in and 110 runs, leading the league in all three, and he led it in runs batted in again in 1907, 1914 and 1918. Sixteen seasons gave him 2,169 hits, 425 doubles, 166 triples, 441 stolen bases and a .291 average.

In July 1911 he was called out on strikes, argued, and punched the umpire hard enough to knock him unconscious. He was suspended for the rest of the season, which was reduced to thirty-six days, and the incident followed him.

He became an umpire himself in the National League in 1928, the only man to have been suspended for hitting one and then to have worked as one. He died of pneumonia in March 1929, at forty-four. Eight writers' ballots and two committees have given him no more than three votes.
