Sammy Sosa Marquee

He hit 66 in 1998, 63 in 1999 and 64 in 2001, and led the National League in none of those three years. Mark McGwire hit 70 and then 65, and Barry Bonds hit 73. The two seasons Sosa did lead were 2000, with 50, and 2002, with 49.

He was Most Valuable Player in 1998, when he also led the league in runs batted in with 158 and in runs with 134. He led in both again in 2001. The archive records six games in which he hit three home runs, three of them in 2001. He finished with 2,408 hits, 1,667 runs batted in and 2,306 strikeouts.

He testified before Congress in 2005 and was named in the Mitchell report in 2007. He appeared on ten writers' ballots between 2013 and 2022 and was never named on more than 73, which came in a year when 394 ballots were cast and 296 were needed. The last of them was 2022.
