San Francisco started him in the last week of the 1993 season with the Giants and Braves tied for the division, and he lost twice, including the finale that ended the year one game short. He was twenty-one and the writers blamed him for it for a decade.
He pitched poorly for three more clubs and quit the game after 1997 to work as a minister and a truck driver in his native Dominican Republic. Pittsburgh talked him into a comeback in 2002, this time as a reliever, and he worked 94 games in 2006 and 84 the year after with earned run averages under three.
Twelve seasons gave him 44 wins, 57 saves, 847 innings and a 4.31 earned run average across 497 appearances. He finished with Milwaukee in 2008 at thirty-six. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
