Born May 3, 1977
Sechelt, BC, CAN
He did both jobs and did them years apart: 33 saves for the Cubs in 2005 with a 3.13 earned run average, and then 17-6 with a 2.96 as a starter in 2008, when Chicago won 97 games. Sixteen seasons gave him 132 wins, 133 losses, 87 saves, 2,075 strikeouts and a 4.35 earned run average.
He is Canadian, from Gibsons, British Columbia, and was drafted out of high school there by Texas. His daughter was born with DiGeorge syndrome in 2009 and he set up a foundation for families dealing with it, which is what he was nominated for the Clemente Award for.
His last season was 2013, in Boston, and it ended with a World Series. He sat out 2014 rather than take the money for a year he did not think he could pitch, which almost nobody does, and has worked for the Cubs since. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
