In 1959 he won his first seventeen decisions out of the bullpen and finished 18-1, a winning percentage of .947 that in the whole record only Connie Rector has matched, going 18-1 for the Lincoln Giants in 1929. Face made 57 appearances that year, all in relief, and saved 10 besides.

He threw a forkball, which almost nobody did then, and he is one of the men who turned relief pitching into a specialty rather than a demotion. He saved 193 games across sixteen seasons — 56th all-time, and a large number for a career that ended in 1969 — and led the National League three times, with 28 in 1962.

He saved three games in the 1960 World Series, which Pittsburgh won on Bill Mazeroski's home run in the seventh. Fifteen writers' ballots between 1976 and 1990 got him to 79 votes of 427 at the peak, and no committee has taken him further. He died in February 2026, at ninety-seven.
