Roger Peckinpaugh Marquee

b. February 5, 1891 · Cleveland Naps 1910, 1912–1913, New York Yankees 1913–1921, Washington Senators 1922–1926, Chicago White Sox 1927

New York put him in charge of the club for the last twenty games of 1914, at twenty-three, and no younger man has managed in the major leagues. He was the Yankee shortstop for nine years after that and their captain, and he was traded to Washington in 1922 in time for two pennants and a championship.

The Most Valuable Player award came in 1925, when he hit .294 for a club that won 96 games; the vote gave him 45 points of 64. Then in the World Series against Pittsburgh he made eight errors in seven games, which is still the record, and two of them in the seventh game let in the runs that lost it.

Seventeen seasons gave him 1,876 hits, 1,006 runs, 814 walks and a .259 average, with 1,982 games at shortstop. He managed Cleveland for seven seasons and later ran the club's front office. Nine writers' ballots listed him. He died in 1977, at eighty-six.
