Los Angeles gave him thirty starts in 1979, he won seventeen games, and the writers made him Rookie of the Year in the National League. He won three the next year and two the year after that, and was traded to Cleveland, where he started 27 games in 1982 and 35 in 1983.
Cleveland traded him to the Chicago Cubs in June 1984. He had gone 4-5 with a 5.15 earned run average in fifteen starts before the deal. In twenty starts for the Cubs he went 16-1 with three shutouts and a 2.69 mark, and he won the Cy Young Award. Of the 130 Cy Young seasons in the record, his is the only one split between two clubs.
Chicago won 96 games and the National League East that year, its first division title and its first postseason since 1945. He lost fourteen games in 1986, then led the league in wins with 18 in 1987 and took the Comeback Player and Roberto Clemente awards. He finished 171-139 over eighteen seasons with 392 starts and 1,679 strikeouts.
