Rick Ankiel Marquee

b. July 19, 1979 · St. Louis Cardinals 1999–2001, 2004, 2007–2009, Kansas City Royals 2010, Atlanta Braves 2010, Washington Nationals 2011–2012, Houston Astros 2013, New York Mets 2013

He went 11-7 with a 3.50 earned run average and 194 strikeouts as a twenty-year-old rookie in 2000, finished second in the Rookie of the Year voting, and then, in the first game of that October's playoffs, threw five wild pitches in one inning. He never recovered the strike zone as a starting pitcher; walks and wild pitches drove him back to the minor leagues and, eventually, out of pitching altogether.

He remade himself as an outfielder, working his way back to the majors in 2007 and hitting 25 home runs with 71 runs batted in for St. Louis the following year — one of the very few pitchers of any note to return to the majors as an everyday position player. Eleven seasons gave him 462 hits, 76 home runs and a .240 average as a hitter, on top of 13 wins and 242 innings as a pitcher.

He played center field for five more clubs after St. Louis and finished with Houston in 2013 at thirty-three. The 2019 ballot gave him no votes of 425.
