Richie Ashburn Marquee Hall of Fame 1995

Philadelphia had not won a pennant since 1915. On the last day of the 1950 season the Phillies beat Brooklyn 4-1 to take one, and Ashburn's throw to the plate in the ninth inning cut down the run that would have forced a playoff. He was twenty-three and in his third season.

He batted .308 across fifteen seasons with 2,574 hits and 29 home runs. He led the National League in walks four times, drawing 125 in 1954, and in hits three times, with 221 in 1951 and 215 in 1958. He walked 1,198 times in his career and struck out 571.

His last team was the 1962 Mets, who went 40-120 in their first season. He hit .306 for them, made the All-Star team at thirty-five, then left to broadcast Phillies games, which he did until the night before he died. The Hall of Fame elected him in 1995, thirty-three years after his last game.
