Born August 2, 1882
Warren, OH, USA
On April 15, 1909 he held Brooklyn without a hit for nine innings at the Polo Grounds and the Giants did not score either. Brooklyn got a hit in the tenth and three runs in the thirteenth, and he lost 3-0. It is the fullest expression of a career that people at the time thought was cursed; the nickname was Kalamity Kid.
Seventeen seasons gave him 183 wins against 167 with a 2.63 earned run average, 3,198 innings, 209 complete games and 26 shutouts. He won 22 games for the pennant-winning Giants in 1905 at twenty-two, and pitched in three World Series for John McGraw without ever winning a game in one.
He was among the first pitchers used deliberately in relief: he led the National League in saves in 1914 and 1916, when the statistic did not exist and the role barely did. No Hall of Fame ballot has ever listed him. He died in 1936, at fifty-four.
