He went 20-9 for the 1962 White Sox, at thirty-two, in his twelfth season and his first as a genuine front-line starter, and was an All-Star. The next year he threw seven shutouts to lead the American League and had a 3.24 earned run average.
Fourteen seasons gave him 104 wins against 107, a 4.01 earned run average, 1,881 innings and 68 complete games. He also hit .192 with seven home runs, which for the period is respectable.
He lost two seasons to the Army in Korea and spent his twenties on Kansas City clubs that finished last. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 2022, at ninety-two.
