Phil Garner Marquee

b. April 30, 1949 · Oakland Athletics 1973–1976, Pittsburgh Pirates 1977–1981, Houston Astros 1981–1987, Los Angeles Dodgers 1987, San Francisco Giants 1988

He had 12 hits in 24 at bats in the 1979 World Series, which Pittsburgh won from three games down, and drove in five runs. He was called Scrap Iron and played second base and third for sixteen seasons: 1,594 hits, 109 home runs, 225 stolen bases, three All-Star selections and a .260 average.

He managed for fifteen seasons — Milwaukee, Detroit and Houston — and in 2004 took over the Astros in July with the club at 44-44 and got them to the Championship Series. The following year they won the pennant, the first in that franchise's forty-four years, and lost the World Series to the White Sox.

He was Manager of the Year in 1992 for a Milwaukee club that won 92 games. The 1994 ballot gave him two votes of 456. He died in April 2026, at seventy-six.
