Paul Richards Marquee

Richards' playing career covered eight seasons and 523 games, 486 of them at catcher. He had 321 hits, 15 home runs and a .227 average. His busiest offensive year was 1944 with Detroit, when he played 95 games, collected 71 hits and drove in 37.

His larger major-league record came as a manager. Richards went 923-901 across 1,837 games for the White Sox and Orioles. His 1954 Chicago club went 91-54, and his 1960 Baltimore club went 89-65 and finished second.

Richards managed Chicago from 1951 through 1954, Baltimore from 1955 into 1961 and returned for one final White Sox season in 1976. As a player he had represented Brooklyn, the Giants, Philadelphia and Detroit. Two Veterans Committee contributor ballots gave him 10 votes apiece. He died in 1986, at seventy-seven.
