Abbott went 17-4 for Seattle in 2001, setting career highs in wins and strikeouts with 118 while working 163 innings. His 4.25 earned run average showed how much the record also depended on support, but it remained the defining line of his eleven-season career.
He finished 43-37 with 496 strikeouts and a 4.92 earned run average in 720 innings. Abbott started 112 of his 162 appearances and completed one game, in 2001. The year before, he had gone 9-7 with a 4.22 average across a career-high 179 innings.
Minnesota introduced him to the majors in 1990, followed by five appearances for Cleveland in 1993. He did not return until Seattle used him in 1998, beginning his most substantial five-year stretch. Abbott later pitched for Kansas City and split his final 2004 season between Tampa Bay and Philadelphia.
