He went 14-7 with a 2.74 earned run average for the 1976 Reds, who won the World Series, and tied Butch Metzger for the Rookie of the Year award — eleven points each, and the same number of first-place ballots. He was twenty-four.
On June 15, 1977, Cincinnati sent him, Doug Flynn, Steve Henderson and Dan Norman to New York for Tom Seaver. He was an All-Star for the Mets in 1978 and then broke a bone in his foot kicking a dugout step in frustration, which cost him the rest of that season.
Ten seasons gave him 69 wins against 67, a 3.52 earned run average, 1,177 innings and seven shutouts. He pitched for the Dodgers and Phillies at the end and was done at thirty-three. He died in April 2024, at seventy-one.
