b. December 25, 1927 · Philadelphia Athletics 1947–1949, Chicago White Sox 1950–1963, Houston Colt .45's 1964, Houston Astros 1965

Philadelphia traded him to Chicago at twenty-one for a catcher, and he played second base for the White Sox for the next fourteen years. Of his 2,367 career games, 2,295 were at the position. He led the American League in hits in 1952, 1954, 1957, and 1958, and made twelve All-Star teams.

He stood 5-foot-10 and weighed 160 pounds, and he played 150 games or more in eleven consecutive seasons. He won the Gold Glove in 1957, 1959, and 1960, and was named the league's most valuable player in 1959, when the White Sox won the pennant.

He died in 1975 at forty-seven, three weeks before his forty-eighth birthday. Ten years later the writers left him two votes short of election, 295 when 297 were needed. The Veterans Committee put him in the Hall of Fame in 1997, twenty-two years after his death.
