Born August 21, 1916
Tracy, MO, USA
In 1951 he went 20-16 for a Pittsburgh club that finished seventh and lost 90 games, which is close to the limit of what one pitcher can do for a bad team. He then led the National League in losses three years running: 21, 19 and 20. The clubs behind him lost 112, 104 and 101.
Eighteen seasons gave him 172 wins against 181, a 3.66 earned run average, 3,052 innings and 149 complete games. He won a World Series game for St. Louis in 1946 and pitched in another for the Yankees in 1958, twelve years apart, at forty-two.
He was called the Thomas Edison of the mound for the number of grips and deliveries he tried, and he was still pitching in the major leagues at forty-three. No Hall of Fame ballot has ever listed him. He died in 1989, at seventy-three.
