b. June 25, 1963 · Texas Rangers 1986–1991, New York Yankees 1992–1995, 1997, Boston Red Sox 1996–2000, Toronto Blue Jays 1998, Oakland Athletics 2000

New York signed him for nothing after Texas let him go, and in 1993 he hit 26 home runs with 84 runs batted in and a .305 average, made the All-Star team and won a Silver Slugger. Nobody had expected any of it; he had 22 home runs in six previous seasons.

Fifteen seasons gave him 1,138 hits, 187 home runs, 702 runs batted in, 652 walks and a .270 average. He caught 751 games and played 301 at first base, mostly for New York and Boston, and hit 24 home runs for the 1996 Red Sox.

He was drafted out of Florida in the sixteenth round and reached the major leagues at twenty-three. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
