Born May 30, 1878
Peoria, IL, USA
He hit .356 with 216 hits and 124 runs, the most in the league, for the 1905 Giants who won the World Series, and .334 with 198 hits in 1908. His career average of .333 across twelve seasons ranks among the best anyone has managed, though injuries and off-field detours kept the career short.
He married the actress Mabel Hite in 1906 and toured with her in a vaudeville act built around his baseball fame, sitting out entire major-league seasons at the height of his ability to do it — 1907 and 1909 both, among others. Sportswriters called him Turkey Mike for his strut. Twelve seasons gave him 1,282 hits, 176 doubles, 97 triples, 669 runs batted in and 213 stolen bases.
He had already served time for assaulting a woman early in his career, which the game and the public mostly forgave once he started hitting. He worked in Hollywood as an actor and stuntman after baseball. Four writers' ballots listed him. He died in 1933, at fifty-five.
