He led the National League with 54 doubles for Montreal in 1997, the most anyone in that league had hit since Stan Musial in 1953, with 177 hits and an All-Star selection. He moved from shortstop to second base in 2000 and won a Gold Glove there at thirty-six.

Fifteen seasons gave him 2,040 hits, 391 doubles, 640 runs batted in, 133 stolen bases and a .289 average. He hit .314 for the Cubs in 2003 and .297 for Kansas City in 2006.

He was drafted in the eleventh round out of a Louisiana junior college and reached the major leagues at twenty-four. The 2016 ballot gave him no votes at all.
