Born November 21, 1960
San Jose, CA, USA
He went 14-6 with a 1.72 earned run average in 1986, working 69 games and 157 innings out of the Toronto bullpen — an unusual amount of work for a reliever then or now — and struck out 166. He finished third in the Rookie of the Year voting and sixth in the Cy Young balloting despite never starting a game.
His arm angle came from almost underhand, which made him nearly impossible for right-handed hitters to pick up cleanly, and he stayed effective with it for a decade even after arm trouble briefly cost him his career in the late 1980s.
Eleven seasons gave him 48 wins, 32 saves, 885 innings and a 3.00 earned run average across 563 appearances for four clubs. He finished with Toronto again in 1996 at thirty-five. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
