Luis Aparicio Marquee Hall of Fame 1984

Chicago won the 1959 pennant, its first since 1919, with 97 home runs, the fewest in the American League, and 113 stolen bases, forty-five more than any other club. Aparicio stole 56 of them and played shortstop in all 152 of his games. He was the argument that a team could win without hitting.

He led the league in stolen bases from 1956, his rookie season, through 1964, nine years in a row. Only Rickey Henderson and Max Carey have led more often. He won nine Gold Gloves, was picked for ten All-Star teams, and finished with 2,582 games at shortstop, more than any player had at the position when he stopped in 1973.

He batted .262 and hit 83 home runs, which makes his 1984 election unusual: the case for him was defense and base-stealing rather than the bat. Baltimore won the 1966 World Series with him at shortstop. Omar Vizquel and Derek Jeter have since passed his games total at the position, and nobody else has.
