Louis Santop Marquee Hall of Fame 2006

b. January 17, 1889 · Oklahoma Monarchs 1910, Philadelphia Giants 1911, New York Lincoln Giants 1911–1914, New York Lincoln Stars 1915–1916, Brooklyn Royal Giants 1916–1919, Hilldale Club 1918–1926

The counted years, 1923 to 1926, hold 110 hits and a .311 average over 115 recorded games, by which time he was in his middle thirties. The thirteen before them, from 1910, hold 383 hits at .350 across 301 recorded games and are not counted, because no organized Negro league existed to play them in.

He caught 311 games. He was a left-handed hitter, unusual behind the plate, and the reputation was for distance: the nickname was Big Bertha, after the German siege gun. He finished with the Hilldale Club, which won three straight pennants in the middle 1920s.

He worked as a bartender in Philadelphia afterward and died at fifty-three. The Hall of Fame elected him in 2006 through the special Negro Leagues committee, sixty-four years later. The figures are partial because these statistics were not kept with the resources the white major leagues had.

Seasons outside MLB's recognized major leagues appear in All seasons, but not in Major leagues or the leaderboards. For Louis Santop, that is 1910–1922. Why totals can differ.
