He was the Royals' first star, taking the 1969 Rookie of the Year award in that franchise's first season, and then spent eleven years with the Yankees, hitting .295 for them and playing in four World Series. Eighteen seasons gave him 1,705 hits, 305 doubles and a .291 average.

He managed for twenty-three seasons — the Yankees, Cincinnati, Seattle, Tampa Bay and the Cubs — and won 1,835 games. Cincinnati won the World Series in his first year there, in 1990, and his 2001 Seattle club won 116 games, which ties the record.

The arguing was its own institution: base-throwing, cap-throwing, ejections in six different decades of footage. He has been on three era committees since 2017 without election. The 1990 ballot gave him two votes of 444.
