Lonnie Smith Marquee

b. December 22, 1955 · Philadelphia Phillies 1978–1981, St. Louis Cardinals 1982–1985, Kansas City Royals 1985–1987, Atlanta Braves 1988–1992, Pittsburgh Pirates 1993, Baltimore Orioles 1993–1994

Philadelphia in 1980, St. Louis in 1982, Kansas City in 1985, Atlanta in 1991 and 1992: five World Series with four clubs, and rings from the first three. He scored 120 runs in 1982 to lead the National League, hit .307, stole 68 bases and finished second in the Most Valuable Player voting with 218 points of 336.

Seventeen seasons gave him 1,488 hits, 909 runs, 370 stolen bases and a .288 average. He hit .288 or better in eight seasons and could not field; he was a left fielder by process of elimination, and the nickname was Skates, for the way he moved on grass.

Cocaine cost him the middle of the 1980s — he testified at the Pittsburgh trials in 1985 and went through treatment — and Atlanta brought him back at thirty-three to hit 21 home runs in 1989. In the seventh game of the 1991 World Series he was on first when a double was hit and did not score, and the play is still argued about. The 2000 ballot gave him one vote of 499.
