He was not good enough for his high school team in Sacramento and signed with Philadelphia for no bonus in 1965. He then played sixteen seasons at shortstop, 2,222 games of it, won two Gold Gloves and was chosen for five All-Star teams, and had 2,191 hits with a .260 average.

He hit 15 home runs in his whole career and 192 hits in 1978, and he was the shortstop for the 1980 Philadelphia club that won the only World Series that franchise had then — he hit .375 in it. Chicago got him in 1982 in the trade that sent Ryne Sandberg to the Cubs as well.

He managed the Phillies and San Diego, coached for twenty more years, and was thrown out of games at a rate that suited his reputation. The 1991 ballot gave him 11 votes of 443.
