He was 16-3 with a 2.86 earned run average for the 2012 Cardinals and became a free agent that winter attached to a qualifying offer, which meant the club that signed him would forfeit a draft pick. Nobody would. He signed with Milwaukee on March 25, eleven days before the season, and the rule was renegotiated afterward.
Sixteen seasons gave him 147 wins against 143, a 4.40 earned run average, 2,531 innings and 1,615 strikeouts. He won 15 games for the 2008 Cardinals and pitched for the 2011 club that won the World Series, starting two games of it.
Minnesota drafted him and traded him at twenty-two; six clubs used him in all. He was never an All-Star. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
