He was 11-9 with a 2.52 earned run average for St. Louis in 1976, the lowest in the league, at twenty-three. In 1983, with Philadelphia, he went 19-6 with a 2.37 and won the Cy Young Award with 20 of the 24 first-place votes, and the Phillies won the pennant.
Thirteen seasons gave him 123 wins against 108, a 3.59 earned run average, 2,148 innings and 18 shutouts. He won a game in the 1983 World Series, the only one Philadelphia took.
He was traded three times and had a temper that got him suspended and fined more than once. He was never an All-Star. The 1992 ballot gave him no votes at all.
