In the third game of the 1988 Championship Series an umpire found pine tar in his glove and he was ejected and suspended, which the Dodgers appealed down to two games. He came back to save the last game of that series and pitched in four games of the World Series Los Angeles won, saving the second and the fourth.
Fifteen seasons gave him 155 saves and a 3.34 earned run average across 844 innings, with three All-Star selections. He saved 29 games for Oakland in 1985 and 28 with a 1.58 earned run average for the Dodgers in 1989.
He came to Los Angeles from Oakland in the trade that sent Bob Welch the other way, a three-club deal involving eight players. He was a starter early and never started again after 1984. No Hall of Fame ballot has listed him.
