Jackie Jensen Marquee

b. March 9, 1927 · New York Yankees 1950–1952, Washington Senators 1952–1953, Boston Red Sox 1954–1959, 1961

He drove in 122 runs in 1958 with 35 home runs and won the Most Valuable Player award, one of three seasons in which he led the American League in runs batted in. He also led it in stolen bases in 1954 and in triples in 1956 and won a Gold Glove in right field — an all-round player in a decade that did not use the phrase.

He was terrified of flying and had been since the Yankees started traveling by air. He retired after the 1959 season at thirty-two, came back in 1961 having tried hypnosis and a course of treatment, hit .263 and stopped for good. Eleven seasons gave him 1,463 hits, 199 home runs, 929 runs batted in and a .279 average.

He had been an All-America fullback at California and played in the 1949 Rose Bowl, and he is the only man to have played in a Rose Bowl and a World Series. Six writers' ballots gave him no more than three votes. He died of a heart attack in 1982, at fifty-five.
