He was 24-7 in 1962 with a sixteen-game winning streak between June and September, and San Francisco caught Los Angeles in a playoff. He started the second, fifth and seventh games of the World Series against the Yankees, won two of them, and lost the last 1-0 to Ralph Terry.
He had been Rookie of the Year in 1957 at twenty-seven, going 19-8 for Philadelphia and leading the National League with 188 strikeouts, having spent two years in the Army and six in the minor leagues. Twelve seasons gave him 137 wins against 101, a 3.69 earned run average and 2,049 innings.
He finished second in the 1962 Cy Young voting to Don Drysdale, when the award went to one pitcher in all of baseball. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 2000, at seventy.
