McCarthy reached his high point with Pittsburgh in 1899, hitting .306 with 173 hits, 109 runs and 28 stolen bases. He also drove in 69 runs and hit four home runs. Each of those figures was at or near his career best during a four-year stretch in which he played nearly every day.
Twelve major-league seasons gave him 1,205 hits, 171 doubles, 66 triples, 476 runs batted in, 551 runs and 145 stolen bases with a .287 average. He played 1,047 games in the outfield and 23 at first base.
His career began with Cincinnati in 1893, paused for three seasons, then resumed with Pittsburgh in 1898. McCarthy moved through Chicago and three successive Cleveland club identities before returning to Chicago during 1903. Brooklyn employed him for his final two seasons, ending in 1907. He died in 1948, at seventy-nine.
