Jack Bentley Marquee

Bentley returned from six years outside the majors as a genuine two-way contributor for the Giants in 1923. He went 13-8 across 183 innings and hit .427, collecting 38 hits in 89 at bats. The next season he improved to 16-5 with a 3.78 earned run average in 188 innings.

Nine major-league seasons gave him a 46-33 pitching record, nine saves, 259 strikeouts and a 4.01 earned run average in 714 innings. He completed 39 of 89 starts. At the plate he hit .291 with 170 hits, 30 doubles, seven home runs and 71 runs batted in.

Washington first used him from 1913 through 1916, and he led the American League with four saves in 1914 while also starting 11 games. Bentley came back with New York in 1923 and later split 1926 between Philadelphia and the Giants. His 59 games at first base underline that his batting record was more than a pitcher's sideline.
