Hughie Jennings Marquee Hall of Fame 1945

He was the shortstop of the Baltimore Orioles teams that finished first in the National League in 1894, 1895 and 1896, playing for Ned Hanlon with Wilbert Robinson catching. He batted .312 for his career on 1,526 hits, and Baltimore is where the hitting came: 204 hits and 159 runs in 1895, and 209 hits in 1896.

He crowded the plate and took the consequences. He was hit 51 times in 1896, more than in any season the archive records for anyone, and 46 times in each of the two years after that, behind only his own 51 and Ron Hunt's 50 in 1971. His career total of 287 leads everyone; Craig Biggio is second, two short.

His last full seasons were in Brooklyn and Philadelphia, through 1902. He is remembered for managing Detroit through Ty Cobb's early years, and while he had that job he put himself into six games between 1907 and 1918, which is why his span runs 28 years for 18 seasons.
