Howard Ehmke

Howard Ehmke Marquee

b. April 24, 1894 · Buffalo Blues 1915, Detroit Tigers 1916–1917, 1919–1922, Boston Red Sox 1923–1926, Philadelphia Athletics 1926–1930

He had made eight starts all season and won seven games when Connie Mack gave him the first game of the 1929 World Series ahead of Lefty Grove and George Earnshaw. He struck out thirteen Cubs, more than anyone had in a World Series game, and won it 3-1. He was thirty-five and never pitched a full season again.

Fifteen seasons gave him 166 wins against 166, a 3.75 earned run average, 2,820 innings and 199 complete games. He won 20 games for a Boston club that lost 91 in 1923 and threw a no-hitter that September, and in his next start allowed one hit — an infield single the scorer might have called an error.

He began in the Federal League with Buffalo in 1915 and ended with Philadelphia. He ran a tarpaulin company in Philadelphia afterward and held patents on the fabric. Nine writers' ballots gave him no more than twelve votes. He died in 1959, at sixty-four.
