Herb Pennock Marquee Hall of Fame 1948

b. February 10, 1894 · Philadelphia Athletics 1912–1915, Boston Red Sox 1915–1917, 1919–1922, 1934, New York Yankees 1923–1933

Connie Mack signed him at eighteen and used him sparingly for four seasons before selling him to Boston in 1915. He spent 1918 in the Navy and was twenty-five before he took a regular turn, going 16-8 for the Red Sox in 1919. Boston sent him to New York in 1923, and he stayed eleven years.

He won 162 games for the Yankees, including 23 in 1926 and 21 in 1924, and led the American League in shutouts in 1928 with five. New York won the World Series in 1923, 1927, 1928 and 1932, and he pitched for all four of those teams. By the end he was a relief pitcher, with five starts in 23 games for New York in 1933.

He finished 240-162 with a 3.60 earned run average, 247 complete games and 35 shutouts across 22 seasons. Afterward he became general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, and he was still in the job when he died in January 1948, at fifty-three. The writers elected him that year with 94 votes of 121, where 91 were needed.
