The bat had a thin handle and a barrel that flared out like a milk bottle, and he choked up on it and slapped. It got him 182 hits and 39 doubles in 1917, both the most in the league, 28 more doubles and 86 runs to lead it in 1918, and 84 walks to lead it in 1916.

Sixteen seasons gave him 1,774 hits, 308 doubles, 918 runs, 696 walks and a .292 average, with 1,299 games at third base. He was the third baseman for the Cincinnati club that won the 1919 World Series and for the Giants clubs that won in 1921 and 1922, and he hit .474 in the 1922 Series.

He was 5 feet 8 and weighed 158 pounds. Eight writers' ballots and six committees have taken up his name; the best of them gave him five votes. He died in 1968, at seventy-eight.
