Harry Gumbert Marquee

b. November 5, 1909 · New York Giants 1935–1941, St. Louis Cardinals 1941–1944, Cincinnati Reds 1944, 1946–1949, Pittsburgh Pirates 1949–1950

He won 18 games for the 1939 Giants as a starter, pitched in the 1937 World Series for them and the 1942 and 1943 ones for St. Louis, and then reinvented himself: Cincinnati used him in relief from 1944, and in 1948, at thirty-eight, he saved 17 games to lead the league across 61 appearances. He made 508 pitching appearances across those fifteen seasons.

Fifteen seasons gave him 143 wins against 113, a 3.68 earned run average, 2,156 innings, 96 complete games, 14 shutouts and 48 saves. He was still pitching at forty in Pittsburgh.

He was called Gunboat and worked in Texas after the game. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 1995, at eighty-five.
