Born January 31, 1931
Azusa, CA, USA
He went 16-8 in 1962 with a 2.21 earned run average, the lowest in the league, and was chosen for the All-Star team. He had been a reliever for four years before that and went back to being one after two seasons in the rotation.
He also hit .085 — 33 hits in 388 at bats across sixteen years. He knew exactly how bad he was, made a running joke of it, and asked for the ball the one time he hit a double.
Sixteen seasons gave him 75 wins against 72, a 3.24 earned run average, 1,375 innings and 33 saves. He pitched ten years for Detroit and finished with the Cubs at thirty-nine. He then built an auto-parts company in southwest Detroit that employed Mexican-American workers by the hundred and became one of the largest Hispanic-owned businesses in the country. He died of cancer in 1994, at sixty-three.
