Fergie Jenkins

Fergie Jenkins Marquee Hall of Fame 1991

b. December 13, 1942 · Philadelphia Phillies 1965–1966, Chicago Cubs 1966–1973, 1982–1983, Texas Rangers 1974–1975, 1978–1981, Boston Red Sox 1976–1977

He grew up in Chatham, Ontario, where the game everyone played was hockey, and then threw strikes for nineteen years. He struck out 3,192 batters and walked 997, the first pitcher past 3,000 strikeouts with fewer than a thousand walks. He finished 284-226 with a 3.34 earned run average and 267 complete games.

He won twenty games for the Cubs six years running, from 1967 through 1972. The Cy Young Award came in 1971, when he went 24-13 and completed 30 of his 39 starts. Traded to Texas, he won 25 games in 1974 and led the American League, the most he ever won in a season.

A drug arrest in Toronto near the end of his playing days brought a suspension that an arbitrator lifted. The writers passed on him twice before electing him in 1991, and the margin was as thin as a margin gets: 334 votes of 443, with 333 needed. No Canadian had been elected before him.
