His father died in the Dominican Republic hours before he took the mound in Kansas City for the opening game of the 2015 World Series. His family had asked the club not to tell him, and he pitched six innings without knowing. He flew home, came back, and started the fifth game as well; the Royals won the title.
He was 17-6 with a 3.21 earned run average and 206 strikeouts for Cincinnati in 2008, his first full season, and was an All-Star. Fifteen seasons gave him 95 wins against 89, a 4.45 earned run average and 1,323 strikeouts.
He came to Cincinnati in the trade that sent Josh Hamilton to Texas, was suspended fifty games in 2010 for a positive test, and threw a no-hitter for Miami in June 2017. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
