He was 28-12 with a 1.53 earned run average in 1917 and 29-7 with a 1.82 in 1919, the two best seasons any White Sox pitcher had in that era. Fourteen seasons gave him 209 wins against 149, a 2.38 earned run average, 3,226 innings, 249 complete games and 35 shutouts.

He took $10,000 to help lose the 1919 World Series to Cincinnati, lost the first game and the fourth, and confessed to a grand jury the following September. He had won 21 more games in 1920 before the confession stopped him, at thirty-six. A jury acquitted all eight men in 1921 and Kenesaw Mountain Landis banned them anyway, the day after the verdict.

He threw a knuckleball and a shine ball and is one of the men credited with the first of those. He farmed in Michigan for the rest of his life and gave one interview about it, decades later, saying he had done it for his family and that it was no excuse. No Hall of Fame ballot has ever listed him and none can.
