Dizzy Trout

Dizzy Trout Marquee

b. June 29, 1915 · Detroit Tigers 1939–1952, Boston Red Sox 1952, Baltimore Orioles 1957

In 1944 he went 27-14 with a 2.12 earned run average, 33 complete games, seven shutouts and 352 innings, and finished second in the Most Valuable Player voting to Hal Newhouser, who pitched for the same club. Trout had ten first-place votes to Newhouser's seven and lost 236 to 232, which is how the points work.

Fifteen seasons gave him 170 wins against 161, a 3.23 earned run average, 2,725 innings and 158 complete games, thirteen of them in Detroit. Detroit won the 1945 World Series in seven games and he pitched in it, a year after the one that should have been his.

He wore thick glasses, talked continuously, and got the nickname for it rather than for any resemblance to Dizzy Dean. His son Steve Trout pitched twelve seasons and won 88 games. He died in 1972, at fifty-six.
